As with any newly acquired knowledge, phonemic awareness must be used immediately and in concrete form. Once a child masters a skill at the Phoneme Center, they can see the same letter blends in use at the Word Center. While children will also be exposed to whole words in other areas of the Literacy Center, the lessons in this section will allow them to work on vocabulary and spelling skills. Children for whom English is not a first language will especially benefit from these word exercises.

Just as phonemes must immediately be used in words, new words need to be used in sentences. There is no better way to internalize the meaning of new vocabulary than through usage. Many children learn proper sentence structure through reading and listening to adults around them. At the Sentence Center, both native and non-native English speakers will be able to learn from interactive multimedia examples of written and spoken language.
